Doctor Sleep Review

Following a childhood haunted by the terrifying events at the Overlook Hotel, Danny Torrance, played by a very understated Ewan McGregor, has been drifting for decades in a haze of drink and drugs, basically doing anything to forget & numb the ghosts that haunt his past via his special power, his ‘Shining’.

Danny finds himself in a new town where a guy takes pity on him, gives him a roof over his head & a job at a local nursing home where he draws on his remnant ‘shining’ power to help people pass on with the aid of a rather cute cat.

Then he meets Abra, played by a wonderful little actress Kayleigh Curran, a young girl with the brightest ‘shining’ ever seen. But her gift is attracting a tribe called The True Knot, think of them as paranormal vampire types but they kinda look a bit harmless and devoted to riding around in their Recreational Vehicles. But The True Knot live off the ‘steam’ that children like Abra produce so are most definitely not harmless!

The True Knot are headed up by Rose The Hat played here by the amazing Rebecca Ferguson and she is one of the best characters of modern cinema in my opinion, being both nice one minute and downright callous the next. Certainly one particular scene where they kidnap a young boy might be a tough watch for some.

So obviously the tribe are very interested in finding Abra and it comes down to Danny to protect her, even though she most definitely can hold her own, but he must confront his own demons as he battles for Abra’s soul and survival.

It won’t be giving anything away by saying that the final battle ends up at a certain rather famous hotel from the original as this has been common knowledge I believe, but it’s how they deal with it which impressed me the most, it was just so clever!

That’s all I’m going to say on the matter as I really don’t want to spoil any surprises but trust me it’s so worth it.

I absolutely loved this movie, there was nothing really I didn’t like about it and that is quite a rare thing these days! I wouldn’t really call it an out and out horror movie as it’s got far too much going on to call it just that but it’s just a great movie end of.

Now all that remains is for me to finish the book by one Mr Stephen King that the film draws from and see how close it is.
