Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

I’m not really a book reader. So when the first Jack Reacher movie came out in 2012, I wasn’t one of those people comparing Tom Cruise to the version of Jack Reacher depicted in the novels – complaining that he was too short, not the right build or look. Instead I was comparing it to other Tom Cruise movies, and movies in general. And it that respect, it kind of sucked a bit. I watched the original with my younger brother, who was always ribbing me about my love of Tom Cruise movies, and we both agreed that it wasn’t great. It was very quickly forgotten, and it definitely left me feeling cautious about watching any sequels that might be made.

And now we do have a sequel! In Never Go Back, Reacher jumps into action following the arrest of Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders), an Army major accused of treason who he’s also been having flirty phone conversations with recently. Reacher suspects that things aren’t quite what they seem and sets out to prove that Susan is innocent. When Reacher has a run in with the law himself, it’s clear that neither of them are safe. So after he breaks her (and himself) out of jail, they embark on a mission to uncover the truth.

Along the way they encounter a girl who may or may not be Reachers daughter and who needs protecting now that the bad guys are out to get them all. And those bad guys do appear everywhere too – in a warehouse, on a plane, on a rooftop! They’re obviously no match for tough guy Reacher though…

There’s more to Reacher than just a hard-ass loner this time round. With Susan Turner and the girl who may be his daughter along for the ride, he becomes more of a protector, more relatable, but still definitely a hard-ass. It’s not just Reacher that’s a hard-ass in this movie though. Colbie Smulders more than holds her own against Cruise, despatching the bad guys with ease and even outrunning him in a couple of scenes too!

It’s a huge improvement on the original Reacher and aside from maybe benefiting from a shorter, tighter run time, this is still a highly enjoyable movie. And I’m definitely interested in more sequels to the franchise now.
