Pet Sematary (2019)

Here we have the second movie adaptation of the classic novel by my favourite author Stephen King, with the first being released way back in 1989!

Being a massive fan of the book, it definitely sparked my interest when I heard news of a new movie version. I haven’t read the book in years, nor seen the original movie in a long time, and I have to say this really didn’t disappoint.

Pet Sematary tells the story of Dr.Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) and his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) as they relocate from Boston to rural Maine with their two young Children Ellie and Gage.

At first this looks like a lovely way of life with a nice house in the country, but they soon discover that there is a very dark side to the place

After their daughter goes off wandering into the woods in their back garden she soon discovers a mysterious burial ground, at which point their neighbour Jud (John Lithgow) turns up to explain that all the local children come to bury their pets here

The family have a much beloved pet Cat called Church, who unfortunately gets hit by a truck and is found dead by the side of the road by Louis and Jud. Aware of how devastated Ellie will be, Jud convinces Louis to bury Church deep in the Pet Sematary

The next day Louis is stunned to find Church is alive buts let’s just say he’s most definitely not the same cat anymore!

Now I think most cats have an evil streak but my god Church has come back aggressive and with a proper evil stare.

So anyway I’m not going to do a massive spoiler filled review buts let’s say that when tragedy strikes some very bad decisions are made and this is where the twist from the book and the previous movie happens

It honestly made a change to be in the cinema and actually witness people jump (mainly the girls) and I really enjoyed this modern version.

I think Lee summed it up for me by saying at the end “god that was intense” but I’ll leave it to the great man Stephen King himself as I know he’s said in interviews that out of all of his work this is his darkest material and the one that stays with him.
