If you’re familiar with the original UK version of The Office, written by and starring Ricky Gervais, then this is basically just an over extended episode of that with some songs thrown in.
David Brent is now a sales rep for a company called Lavichem, but he’s planning a road trip to try and kick start a singing career. We see him in the office environment, where pretty much everyone thinks he’s an idiot, then he goes out on the road where his entire band and the few people that come to his gigs all think he’s an idiot too. There are some genuinely funny scenes along the way, but basically it’s that uncomfortable humour stretched out for far too long – the band exclude him from some fun they’re having, awkward silence when Brent tries to join in, and repeat…
The songs are the best thing about the movie, funny and sung well. I just feel that this is one character that really should have ended when the TV show did.
